However, not every hospital bed or feature is covered.

When Is a Hospital Bed Medically Necessary?

A hospital bed may be medically necessary when a patient’s condition requires positioning that cannot reasonably be accomplished with an ordinary bed.

Examples may include situations where a patient’s condition requires special positioning to alleviate pain, maintain appropriate body alignment, prevent contractures, reduce certain respiratory complications or address other documented medical needs.

A hospital bed may also qualify when medically necessary attachments are required that cannot be used with an ordinary bed.

Does Medicare Cover Semi-Electric Hospital Beds?

Medicare may cover a semi-electric hospital bed when the patient meets the applicable basic hospital-bed coverage criteria and also requires frequent changes in body position or has an immediate need to change position.

Semi-electric beds provide powered adjustment of the head and foot sections while bed-height adjustment is generally manual.

What About Fully Electric Hospital Beds?

This distinction is important.

Under Original Medicare coverage rules, a total electric hospital bed is generally not covered because Medicare considers the powered height-adjustment feature a convenience feature rather than reasonable and necessary DME.

That does not mean patients cannot have a fully electric bed. A patient may choose to purchase one privately when appropriate.

What Documentation Is Required?

Documentation must establish why the hospital bed is medically necessary for the individual patient.

Depending on the particular hospital bed and HCPCS code, documentation requirements may include:

• A Standard Written Order

• Medical records supporting the need for the bed

• A qualifying face-to-face encounter for certain equipment

• Written order prior to delivery when applicable

• Proof of delivery

Simply having a diagnosis does not automatically establish coverage. The medical record should explain the patient’s individual functional or positioning needs.
