Medicare Coverage for Hospital Beds

Semi-Electric Hospital Beds

Semi-electric hospital beds are a standard Medicare-covered DME benefit when the patient meets Medicare’s medical-necessity and documentation requirements. These beds provide electric adjustment of the head and foot sections, while bed-height adjustment is performed manually.

Medicare may cover a semi-electric hospital bed when the patient qualifies for a hospital bed and requires frequent changes in body position or has an immediate need to change body position. Applicable HCPCS codes include E0260, E0261, E0294, E0295, and E0329.

Fully Electric Hospital Beds

Fully electric hospital beds provide powered adjustment of the head, foot, and overall bed height. Unlike semi-electric hospital beds, Medicare does not cover total/fully electric hospital beds as medically necessary DME. Medicare considers the electric height-adjustment feature a convenience feature. Applicable total-electric hospital bed codes are therefore denied as not reasonable and necessary.

Patients who qualify for a Medicare-covered hospital bed but prefer the additional features of a fully electric model may have other purchase or upgrade options available.
